Steilacoom Lodge Receives Special Recognition

WB Kingsbury will have this recognition suitably framed and will present it to the Lodge very soon! [Editor]

From the East

Greetings Brethren,

To all the Ladies of the Lodge I would like to wish you a Happy Valentine's Day on behalf of Steilacoom Lodge #2.  We love and appreciate all that you do for us.

As I indicated in a previous missive, I made a bet at our last installation with WB Michael Turley, WM of Thorton F. McElroy Lodge #302 as to which lodge might be able to get the most Masons to the "Grand Visit" of Bethel #67.  I am very proud of my Brothers, 10 of whom showed up to support the Daughters and saved my goatee!  Our good Brother Turley graciously accepted defeat and shaved his mustache off to the delight of the Daughters!  My Brothers, thank you all for showing up. Not for the goatee, but for the girls.  For many of you it was the first time that you had witnessed any youth group ritual and I think you were all quite impressed. The Jobies, Rainbows and De Molay do a wonderful job with their ritual and whenever Masons show up to their meetings it makes it extra special to them.  Look for more opportunities to visit our youth groups during my term. I think if we can go as a Lodge it really makes our support visible and meaningful to our youth. "Share the Light"

I would also like to thank all of the Brothers that showed up for the district meeting.  We had a large turn out of Brothers supporting our District Deputy, VWB Roy Hammonds.  It was a nice meeting and a good time was had by all!

This month (February 8th) we have our annual visitation to the Masonic Retirement Center with Parkland/ Lakewood Lodge #299. This is our year to provide the entertainment.  Bingo seems to be the game of choice here so I am looking for a Bingo caller. Any volunteers? We will be arriving at the MRC around 1:30 PM to get things set up and organized.  Any and all Brethren and their Ladies are invited to participate. I have invited the Daughters of Bethel 67 to show up and help pass out valentines and prizes.  Bring ideas for prizes (besides cash, which we will do) to the next meeting.

In March, we have our Masonic Youth Appreciation Night, last year's was a lot of fun and I am sure we can look forward to a wonderful evening once again. The date is March 12th, put it on your calendars.

My topic for this month's short talk is the Letter G. All Masons and their Ladies are invited to attend.  (Nothing secret going on here..)  I will call the Lodge to recess so that all interested may attend.

All for now my Brothers, continue Sharing the Light of Masonry and may God keep and Bless you.  Please hold our dear Brother Larry Hoffman and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Fraternally yours,

WB Joe Fuller

WM

History of Steilacoom Lodge #2

The beginnings of Freemasonry in the Pacific Northwest are much older then even the formation of our state and the grand jurisdictions of Washington or Oregon. In the continuing celebration of our sesquicentennial anniversary (I dare you to say that three times fast), I bring you another excerpt from "History of Steilacoom Lodge #2, F. & A.M." written by Bro C. A. Spreen with the permission of Bro Alan T. Spreen, his son.

Thank You Brother Alan!!

"The Beginning of Freemasonry in the Pacific Northwest

Organized Freemasonry in the Pacific Northwest had its beginning at Oregon City, O. T., when, on Feb. 5th, 1846, the following notice appeared in the Oregon Spectator:

"Masonic Notice"

"The members of the Masonic Fraternity in Oregon Territory are respectfully requested to meet at the City Hotel in Oregon City, on the 21st to adopt some measures to obtain a Charter for a Lodge."

Joseph Hull                   P. G. Stewart               W. P. Dougherty

Following publication of the above notice, a meeting was held at which several Masons were present, including Fendall Cason, Joseph Hull, Peter G. Stewart, William P. Dougherty, Lyon A. Smith and Frederick Waymire. A petition was prepared which was sent, together with a letter of instruction, to Dougherty's agent, James G. Spratt, Platte City, Missouri, via Hudson's Bay Company Express. Brother Dougherty's letter to Bro. Spratt instructed the latter to pay the costs of a Charter out of funds in his possession which belonged to Br. Dougherty."

Some may recognize some of the names listed above. Several of these brothers would later play key roles in the formation of not only Steilacoom Lodge, but of the city itself.

We are a little thin on the input for this month as it is the beginning of a new year and the hustle and bustle of the old year has take the time of our members.  More will come next month I am sure.  Thanks!  Editor
