Welcome to Steilacoom Lodge # 2 Moonlighter Online!
|
Moonlighter for May 2004 |
VOLUME 6, ISSUE 5 |

Greetings Brethren!
"Once in a Blue Moon", well, that is what we have this month. That means that we get to enjoy the fellowship and brotherhood of Steilacoom Lodge twice during the month of April. Things have been pretty busy for the lodge. We had (I hope.. I got called into work, sigh) the Walter F. Meier College meeting at our building this month, and would like to thank those that could attend.
I hear that our dear brother WB Bill Rohrer is doing much better now. He sent a note thanking all for their prayers, cards, letters and visits. Please keep WB Bill in your prayers as we all know that there is power therein.
As we approach the 150th Birthday party, WB Thomas Kingsbury is working on putting on a splendid dinner and event for the lodge. It will be on Sunday, June 13th (right after Grand Lodge). We are going to ask the lodge for a sum of money for this to happen. We would like for it to be a formal affair for the members and their lady. (And selected invitees with their ladies.) We can promise great food, great entertainment and great memories. There will be much more information at the next stated meeting!
That is all for this month (you had to hear from me twice, so this is it!). Take care, and God speed.
Fraternally yours,
WB Joe Fuller

History of Steilacoom Lodge #2
While reading thru "History of Steilacoom Lodge #2, F. & A.M.", written by Bro C. A. Spreen, I noticed a chapter dedicated to buildings and properties of the Lodge. Steilacoom Lodge originally met in a hall located at Balch and Starling in Steilacoom. Our forefathers built a temple at the corner of Commercial and Wilkes in 1861, but had to give up this building due to financial difficulties. They returned to the original hall. However, that building burned down in 1868. The Good Templars Lodge offered Steilacoom Lodge the use of their building which was diagonally across from the temple they had built at the corner of Commercial and Wilkes. In 1872 they began looking again for a better place to meet. Ironically, the temple they had built in 1861 was available and this building was rented for $100 a year. Later in 1894, the lodge bought the building. During 1903, the Lodge bought several lots in the area. In 1906, Northern Pacific Railroad began make offers for their water level right of way and in 1910 the lodge sold its' land to the railroad. On July 22, 1910, the cornerstone was laid for the building that would be home to the lodge until 1994 when again, we had to sell the building. The Lodge then took up residence in Tyler Lodge's hall in University Place. In 2001, Clover Lodge approached Steilacoom Lodge with plans for a merger that has benefited both lodges. Our current Lodge building is located at 54th and Puget Sound Ave, in South Tacoma.
I took the dates and places from the book and condensed it down to specifically deal with where our lodge has called "home" throughout the years and added the present day locations. As you can see we have had some of the same issues to deal with today that our founding brothers had to deal with back then.
The excerpts were used with the permission of Bro Alan T. Spreen, his son.
Thank You Brother Alan!!

THE WORKING TOOLS OF AN E-MASON
I now present to you the Working Tools of an e-Mason. They are the Mouse, the Keyboard, and the Modem. The Mouse is to move within the desktop, the Keyboard to input data, and the Modem to publish the data to cyberspace.
However, as we are not here assembled as computer nerds, but rather as Operative e-Masons, these tools are downloaded as vehicles of a moral significance, and to show us the true meaning of e-Masonry. Thus we apply these tools as follows:
The Mouse teaches us to keep within due bounds of the screen, a square where upon we must all meet.
The Keyboard shows us that communication will lead us to a better understanding not only of each other, but with all mankind.
The Modem reminds us that even when we are alone on the most remote part of the globe, we may meet and gain moral sustenance from each other, and thus learn more of the wonderful works of the G.A.O.T.U.

Steilacoom Lodge's History for the first 100 years was published in 1952. It is therefore a challenge to all Past Masters and our long time members to provide something to add to this book so that we may publish a 150 years of Masonry for Steilacoom Lodge #2. We need your history or your memories of the past 50 years to make it possible. Yes, we have the Minutes of the Meetings, but that is not the full story; the funny things that happen in Lodge or at a Special gathering; the antidotes that come and go; the untold story of how the Moon Plaque was made and presented; anything that makes up our history as a Lodge! Please send your stories, articles, and other memories to me, by e-mail to Mike.Smitson@Comcast.net. Or by regular mail to my home at: 9826 Coral Dr SW Lakewood, WA 98498. Or to the Worshipful Master, Joe Fuller. Or to WB Tom Kingsbury.
Lets publish a great 150 years of Masonry of Steilacoom Lodge #2, of the Most Worshipful Free and Accepted Masons of Washington! -- The Editor.
