Welcome to Steilacoom Lodge # 2 Moonlighter Online!

Moonlighter for July 2005

VOLUME 7, ISSUE 7

From the East

As our Worshipful Master is feeling a lot better, the toll on his Lady began to show.  She went into the hospital for a short spell, just after our Worshipful Master got out.  We will continue to pray for them and their speedy recovery.  WM Green has returned to his normal health status - "feeling great", after the doctors changed his medication.  He has been back to log, but his Lady did not make it.  She was still under the weather and they decided that she should not try to come to Lodge.

We have three new petitioners, of which one has received his First Degree.  We will be having more First Degrees in the near future.  Our Second Degree was postponed, as the candidate was not feeling well.  We need to come out and support our new candidates as they go through the degrees, and maybe even lend a hand during one of them!  As always, sideliners are more than welcomed, they really make the Lodge what a Lodge is...Friends meeting Friends enjoined in Fellowship.

For July’s meeting, please bring the following side dishes if you are coming to the 6:30 Dinner:

Last Name Begins with:

A-H Potatoes pasta, rice, etc

I-O Vegetables, Salad, Rolls, etc

P-Z Desserts

From the West

From the West,

Those of you who missed our Youth Night Spaghetti feed in March missed a Great Night.

We had a fine showing from The Anderson Island School with two Students reading from the books provided by the Outreach Program which our Lodge proudly provides. It was awesome to see a first and second grader stand up in the East in front of a Lodge Room full of Proud Masons and guests and read to us. Some of us are a little uncomfortable doing it now.

We also had a  group of young Ladies sing for us. These girls are from a Vocal School in Puyallup, some being taught by my Granddaughter Heather Provst. I believe everyone in the room was surprised to find that one of the girls was eleven, and  the other fourteen.  I already have them booked for entertainment on Installation Night.

I would like to Pay Wages to the Masons and Ladies who made the night a success, WB Glen Henderson did an excellent job on the spaghetti, I am still getting compliments on his sauce from a lot of the Guests. When they ask for the recipe. I tell them that it is a Masonic Secret known only by Glen. Also Brother Will Tobin, Chuck Mills, and Dennis Devish. Mrs. Green and Henderson helped Bus the tables. Brother Tobin and Mills stayed after everyone was gone and did an excellent job cleaning the kitchen.

Our March meeting started off with an excellent Pot Luck. There was a lot of business conducted with a lot of donations made. Contributions were made to the DeMolay Boys to send members to the annual conference, the play ground at Steilacoom, and a contribution to the girls that entertained us on youth night.

 Fraternally

A few notes from our Secretary:

I have good news and bad news to report this month.  On Saturday April 30th our lodge gained four new Master Masons in a one day conferral at the Masonic Retirement Center.  Brothers Duane Plank, William Pace, Wallace Gold and Daniel Austin each, completed the degrees, paid their dues and signed the bylaws. I'd like to thank WB Ray Johnson, Br Jacob Yaconetti, VWB Maurice Nelson (Lafayette Lodge) for assisting me as escorts for our candidates with me.  Part of the bad news (for us, not him) is that Br Austin has been hired as an instructor in the Military Science Department at BYU in Provo, Utah and departed the day after being raised.  More good news is the restoration to membership of Br Ken Daggett who now resides in Hawaii. We also have a candidate to vote on in May and another petition for the degrees to be read.

The bad news is that the Grand Architect of the Universe has called 3 brothers home. We will be doing their memorials at our next meeting.  On May 1st I sent notices to 48 members who have yet to pay their 2005 dues and as of this date  have received dues from 4 members, notice of the death of one of our brothers and notice that the address of one of our members is no longer valid and his mail not forward-able.  One of the four who paid his dues also sent me his new address. If you have received one of these notices and believe you do not owe dues or if you have a financial hardship, please let me know, so the lodge can assist you.

Hope to see you all at Lodge on July 15th.

Fraternally,

Don Campbell

Secretary

KNIGHTS OF ST. ANDREW

ST. ANDREWS DAY

The St. Andrew’s Cross is shaped liked the English letter “X,” and is also referred to as the “saltier” or “Crux Decussta,” with the two bottom legs set into the ground. According to tradition, Andrew, brother of Peter, was crucified on a cross of this shape. Andrew did not feel worthy enough to die on the same style cross on which Christ had died, and he requested a cross of different shape. His request was granted, and he was crucified upside down on the cross, which now bears his name.

To secure his limbs to the cross, Andrew was bound to the cross with ropes, rather than nails. His suffering was thus prolonged. St. Andrew’s Cross came into wide use during the Medieval period and became the national cross of Scotland, since Saint Andrew was its patron saint.

St. Andrews Day was already on the calendar more than a thousand years ago. Already established as a major town in the 12th century, St. Andrews University traces its roots back to the 15th century. But these are only road signs in a long history.

Druid priests were the great power of the land when St. Andrew, and that distinctive "X" shaped cross on which he was crucified in 70 AD, were embraced as Scotland’s symbol of nationhood - The Saint Andrew Cross.

How the early church brought the New Testament story of the fisherman apostle from Capernaum to Scotland, and made him the nation’s patron saint, is buried in the mists of time. It is recorded that Ninian, a Briton, brought the Christian message to the Picts in about 400 AD, which is one and a half centuries before the time of St. Columba. Ninian was a bishop who regularly traveled to Rome for further instruction, and was probably the most revered churchman in the land.

The last of the Scottish kings established the first Order of the Thistle, which used the “X” cross and the crucified figure of St. Andrew. The Order was based on the Biblical story with the sovereign and his twelve chosen knights its total membership.

Today, St. Andrews Day is a time to celebrate and socialize, for patriots, patriotic gatherings and happenings. So wherever you are -whatever you may be doing— raise a glass, toast this land and its Patron Saint for a brighter and happier tomorrow.

29th Degree - Knights of St Andrew

The 29th degree emphasizes the Masonic teachings of equality and toleration. We are reminded that no man, no one Church, no one religion, has a monopoly of truth; that while we must be true and faithful to our own convictions, we must respect the opinions of others.

29th degree - Scottish Knight of Saint Andrew: The virtues of this degree are "Love of God, loyalty to superiors, faithful adherence to promise and active resistance to unfair judgment." There is no apron. The jewel has two parts: on top is a gold hexagram, made of concave-outward triangles, with a compass open to 25 degrees inside it. On the bottom is suspended a gold St. Andrew's cross ("X"), with a knight's helmet, winged serpent pourboires, key, and a point-down triangle. In the center of the cross is a Hebrew YOD, and on its points, clockwise from bottom, the Hebrew letters N M I N.

ST ANDREW THE APOSTLE

The Bible tells us that Andrew, a fisherman from Bethsaida in Galilee, was the ‘first called’ of Christ’s disciples and that he brought his brother Simon Peter to become a follower of Jesus. After the Crucifixion, as tradition relates, Andrew traveled the countries bordering the Black Sea and preached the Gospel in Scythia (as the Ukraine and Southern Russia were anciently known) and in Greece. (For a link between Scythia and the Scots, see the part of the Arbroath Declaration quoted overleaf). His missionary work is still remembered in that part of the world: to this day Andrew is patron saint in Greece, Russia and the Ukraine. It was in Greece, in the city of Patras, that he suffered martyrdom. Possibly because he felt himself unworthy to meet his death on a cross of the same shape as his Lord’s, he was crucified on a diagonal cross.

Part of the tradition is that St Andrew wore blue, and so the white of the wooden cross against the blue of his robes gave us the colors of our national flag. However, there is another legend to explain the white cross on a blue background, a legend which had its birth a long way from Greece, in the village of Athelstaneford in East Lothian.

The Tacoma Valley of Scottish Rite will be starting up a Chapter of the Knights of Saint Andrew.  The next organizational meeting will be on 16 July 2005, at 10:00 AM.  There will be some donuts and coffee during the meeting.  We will be voting on our Constitution and By-Laws at this meeting. It is not too late to become a Charter Member of this organization.  Just be at the 16 July meeting.  Only requirements:  Be a 32° Degree Scottish Rite Mason...a Black Hat and a willingness to serve and help.

A Note from a Past Master:

Dear Brethren,

I'm sorry that I have not written sooner but have been very busy. Edie and I have a new home in Sun City Grand, Surprise, AZ. I have lodge tonight, Wayfarers #50 in Sunnyslope, AZ. I do the lecture for the 2nd degree tonight. I like to give them like WB Attwood did, in a very meaningful way. My thoughts have been with you guys. I want to apologize for not putting out any newsletters for the last couple of months.  I have returned to the world of those that are working for a living and have not adjusted my shorten time schedule to allow much time for this publication.  I will endeavor to try and make this happen on a more routine basis.

Thanks

The Editor!

Can you name all of the organizations shown below?
