Moonlighter for August 2005

VOLUME 7, ISSUE 8

From the East

Four of us attended lodge at Corinthian in Puyallup last week. As it turned out the Most Worshipful Grand Master was there. He gave an interesting message in which he advised that all of us are on the Grand Lodge team and in this capacity we are all responsible for helping to further the meaning of Masonry. It was a great visit, and the pie and ice cream was great.

A couple of us went to Granite Falls for the open air degree which was put on by the Prince Hall Grand Lodge. It was a great presentation that was appreciated by all. The setting is spectacular and if you have never been there I recommend that you make an effort to make the next one.

A couple of us made it to the church service at DuPont this past Sunday. As usual it was very inspirational and the brotherhood was wonderful. I regret that only five members of our lodge attended. I know I encouraged you members to attend for month after month. The only ones attending were Wayne Everett, Mike Smitson, Jason Favre, Gary Emmons, and myself, very disappointing. Oh well, maybe better luck next year.

From the West

Greetings Brothers.

Thank you for the visits, prayers and calls during my stay at the Madigan Army Hosp. I came out less one Kidney but should do well now.

A lot of things have happened during my absence which means that there is a lot of things to do for the rest of the year. I am looking for appointed officers for the next year. If you are interested please contact me. Remember, there is nothing in the code that requires that Officers in line be elected to the next position. Example: if the Senior Warden is not elected to Worshipful Master, that would be the wish of the Brethren and is perfectly Legal. Look at the present Elected Officers and see if you are satisfied with their performance and see if you would like to elect them to the next station.

Our annual picnic is coming up on the 27th of this month. The Lodge will provide the meat, drinks and condiments. The rest is Pot Luck. It has been my observation that there has always been plenty of food. If you have out door games please bring them.

Fraternally,
John Geier
Senior Warden

From the Secretary in absentia.

I have been on the east coast for more than a month now and can assure you that Masonry is alive and well out here. I was privileged to attend Good Samaritan Lodge of Gettysburg on July 2nd. What is significant is that the lodge was opened on the battlefield at Gettysburg and attended by reenactors from both the North and South as well as visitors from around the country. At the end of the meeting we were taken off the field in golf carts to prevent injury in the dark and I had the privilege of riding with a gentleman from North Carolina who is the official General Robert E. Lee designee this year (Eat you heart out Joe Fuller).

On the 9th of July I attended Civil War Lodge of Research #1865 of which I am a member. After an interesting meeting (opened at 10 AM) and an excellent lunch we boarded a bus for a trip to Ft McHenry in Baltimore where a licensed guide made an excellent presentation on the use of Ft McHenry during the Civil War. We were then transported to St Marks cemetery in downtown Baltimore where we place flowers on the graves of General George Armistead, the commander of Ft McHenry and General Lew Armistead who was killed at Gettysburg.

We have also visited Valley Forge and the magnificent Masonic memorial which was restored by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania at a cost of over
a million dollars. While visiting the Little League headquarters at Williamsport, PA with my grandson, Andrew, we were surprised to find that the new Little League stadium and a monument to the founder of Little League were both sponsored by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania with the appropriate symbols placed on both of them.

I will be attending lodge in September in several Pennsylvania lodges as well as visiting some other places of Masonic interest in the New England states and the Canadian Maritime Provinces. Will be leaving the Pennsylvania area around October 1st with a tentative return to the Northwest around the beginning of November.

Fraternally,
Donald J. Campbell

1765 Table Lodge and Initiation

This presentation is a re enactment of a lodge meeting and initiation ceremony, which took place in Union Lodge at the Union Hotel, Royal Square, St. Helier, Jersey in October 1765. This was the first permanent lodge in Jersey and its warrant was issued in April 1765. The lodge was duly registered in the Grand Lodge of England as Lodge No. 349. Its first Master was an Ancient Mason and though instituted under a Modern Warrant, Union Lodge worked with the Ancient Ritual. The Players make no pretence of showing the actual ritual work by Union Lodge, as there is too little information to do that.  However what the group strives to show is what might have been seen, if you were visiting a lodge anywhere in England or its colonies in the year 1765

The setting for the performance is a meeting room above the Union Hotel, Royal Square, St. Helier, in Colonial North America  (All Masonic Lodges in English North America operated under warrants from the Grand Lodge of England.) The night air is chilly and a covering of freshly fallen snow sparkles under the kerosene street lamps, hiding the dirt and filth that litter the now nearly deserted street below.
 It is the evening of
February 15, A.D. 1765, A.L. 5765 - six years after the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, eleven years before the American colonies were lost, in the war of independence. Australian was a thriving Penal Colony and mad king George III was on the throne of England.

The brethren are asked to participate in the performance. When lodge is called up, the audience stands. When asked to sing, they join in. (The words are in the program.) They can "vote". They can toast. They will also have fun!!

Most importantly – It is hoped that this demonstration will provide the brethren with Masonic education as well as entertainment

GOD BLESS AMERICA

This This poem was written by Bro. Reverend Dr. Magill, Rector of St. Paul's Church in Peru, Illinois. It reportedly was written shortly after a lady asked him "Are You a Mason?" It is thought to have been written in the mid to late 1800's.

"Are You a Mason?"

I am one of a band, Who will faithfully stand, In the bonds of affection and love; I have knocked at the door, once wretched and poor, And there for admission I stood.

By the help of a friend, Who assistance did lend, I succeeded an entrance to gain; Was received in the West, By command from the East, But not without feeling some pain.

Here my conscience was taught, With a moral quite fraught, With sentiments hold and true; The onward I traveled, To have it unraveled, What Hiram intended to do.

Very soon to the East, I made my request, And "light" by command did attend; When lo! I perceived, In due form revealed, A Master, and Brother, and Friend.

For the widow distressed, There's a cord in my breast, For the helpless and orphan I feel: And my sword I could draw, To maintain the pure law, Which the duties of a Mason reveal.

Thus have I revealed,
(Yet wisely concealed), What the "free and accepted" will know. I am one of a band, Who will faithfully stand, As a Brother, wherever I go.
