VOLUME 6, ISSUE 9

From the East

Fraternal Greetings Brethren!

The summer is almost gone, soon the days will be getting shorter as we head towards the Autumn.  Lodge activities still abound, however, my brothers!  Come on out to the stated meeting on August 27th.  Potluck at 6:30, stated meeting at 7:30, fellowship always!  I would like to encourage our Entered Apprentices to come on out and meet some more brethren.  There are still a lot of events coming up on the Trestle board, so lets keep the momentum going and show up for Lodge every time the door is open.

Speaking of EA degrees, I would like to thank WB Bailey Green for putting together the degree team for Bro Wallace Gold.  The degree was well done and we had a nice turn out.  I would like to thank our brothers from Parkland/Lakewood Lodge for helping out in several positions, we need to return the favor!

It is also that time of year where the Senior Warden is putting together his officer corps for the next term.  If you are interested in holding office please contact WB Bailey Green.

That is all for this month, my brothers, I am writing this from good ol' Atlanta, Georgia so I will bid y'all adieu.

Fraternally yours,

Joe Fuller

WM

A Special Notice to all our Brothers

WB Treasurer and Bro Secretary both have found some checks and monies when they were working to clear up any left over matters for the Lodge.  We have deposited all the checks and monies.  If perchance, you have previously paid for these items, please send a note to the Secretary and we will gladly return the extra moneys paid.  We do not want to have any brother think we are trying to take their funds!

History of Steilacoom Lodge #2

I have over the past year and a half been bring you excerpts from “History of Steilacoom Lodge #2, F. & A.M.” written by Bro C. A. Spreen, concerning mostly with the Lodge as a whole. Now I would like to bring you some of the Personalities of those brothers that created our lodge.  I have already mentioned WB. William A. Slaughter.  In this excerpt I bring you WB William Henson Wallace, I touched on the highlights as they where written to keep the length reasonable.  These excerpts are brought to you with the permission of VWB Alan T. Spreen, Bro C. A. Spreen’s son.

Thank You Brother Alan Spreen!!

“William Henson Wallace

William H. Wallace, one of the leading men in the formation of Steilacoom Lodge, was born in Miami County, Ohio, July 17, 1811.  He moved as a child to Indiana and thence to Iowa in 1839 where he served in the Legislature and as Senior Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of Iowa in 1849.  At Fairfield, Iowa, he was Receiver of the public moneys until 1853 when he moved to Washington Territory, and settled in Steilacoom.  He was a lawyer of more then usual ability and an affable and dignified gentleman.

Other Masons in Steilacoom joined with Wallace in desiring a local lodge, thus eliminating the long trips to Olympia. In Jan. 1854 the petition was drawn up and presented.

Wallace served as W.M. of Steilacoom Lodge, U.D.  During that time (1854) he was a delegate to the Grand Lodge of Oregon where he served on the committee on finance.  He was the first Master of Steilacoom Lodge under Charter.

Wallace’s political activities took him away from Steilacoom for long periods of time.  Finally, he demitted in 1862, but in Nov. 1870 he again affiliated.  In December he was elected W.M. for 1871.  He was also W.M. in 1877. He was elected W.M. in 1872, but, though he was installed on St. John’s Day, he never was present at another meeting.  He became ill and died on Feb. 7, 1879.  He was buried with honor at old Ft. Steilacoom cemetery, the Grand Master, Elisha P. Ferry presiding.”

A condensed side note for you, Wallace was a Captain of the Volunteers in Pierce County during the Indians War and later promoted to Colonel.  One of the sites to come before the Advisory Board on Historical Sites was Col. Wallace’s grave at Ft. Steilacoom cemetery which is now located on the grounds of Western Washington State Hospital.  The city of Steilacoom was celebrating its’ Centennial and it was arranged to have a dedication of a memorial there on August 25, 1951.  Steilacoom Lodge participated in an impressive ceremony conducted by then W.M. Clyde V. Davidson.

Announcements

Our 150th Celebration continues this month with the Joint Masonic Church Service in DuPont on August 8th.  We will start our march to church with the Prince Hall Masons at 4:30 PM.  The Masonic Float will be there also!!!  We need a lot of Masons walking (If you can...riding if you cant) with the float.  Lets show the Prince Hall Masons that we also care and will outnumber them this year.  For the past few years, they have out numbered us at this Church Service.

The Cemetery Cleanup has been rescheduled. September 18th will be the date!  Bring weed eaters if you have one.  We have planned for lunch and refreshments to be served to keep you going.  At our 30 July stated meeting, a thank you note was read to the members present for the excellent cleanup earlier this year!!!
